Hi Liza, thanks for taking the time to chat with us! For starters, what led you into this creative career?

Originally, I wanted to be a medical illustrator. My grandmother was a chemist, and my mother was always drawing and painting. I think medical illustration was a way for me to bridge those two worlds. When I went to art school, I realized there was so much more. And it was there that I discovered design. From then on everything I did and do has always been focused on design. If it's not connected to design I am not interested.

F

Where do you find inspiration?

Everything and everywhere. A conversation, an image, an encounter, a difference in opinion, a book, a colour, from the mundane to the exciting. You never know what something will lead you to.

F

Can you show us how your studio looks like?

Of course! Here's a look into the Dumbar studio:

F

How do you conquer a creative block?

By having trust that it is part of the process in order to make the next step and that I will overcome it no matter what.

F

What gives you energy outside of work?

I don't make a difference between inside and outside of work. For me it is one continuous line. If I am not at Dumbar, I am busy with @Typeradio. If I am not doing Typeradio, I am collecting books @booksloveliza. I spend hours in second hand book stores just searching.

What are your three favourite Instagram accounts?

What are your three favourite spots in The Netherlands?

1. Antiquariaat Zwaanshals, Rotterdam

2. Stedelijk, Amsterdam

3. Mini World, Rotterdam

F

What have you recently seen that you think is great creative work?

The work of Sister Corita Kent. So much expression in just a simple gesture.

Any cool projects you're working on yourself right now?

At Studio Dumbar we are working on Demo – Design in Motion Festival – which takes place this fall, Nov. 7. It's a project we initiated in collaboration with Exterion Media. We are taking over all 80 screens normally used for advertising for 24 hours in Amsterdam Central Station to show motion work from designers all around the world. There is a line-up plus an open call for submissions.

F

Can you give one piece of advice to young creatives?

Do what you love to do. And if design is not the answer, do something else. It’s about how you love to spend your time and not what your friends, teachers or family expect from you.

Thanks a lot for your time and your answers! Check more work from Studio Dumbar on their website and Instagram.
