About Chris' graduation project 'AImnesia'

The extension of our memories, thoughts, and perceptions beyond biological bodies to algorithmically mediated networks triggers the emergence of a new space where artificial intelligence and the human brain learn from one another. The project 'AImnesia' juxtaposes an algorithmic fiction of procedurally recreated machine memories with a discussion with a machine learning inventor, a techno-philosopher, neuroscientists, and computational artists around the relation between human memory and AI.

Hi Chris, congrats with your graduation! For starters, where does your love for graphic design come from?

I grew up in a very creative family and environment so, since my childhood, everyone knew about the artistic spirit. My universe was built of experimental musical records, books on philosophy and modern artworks. I was constantly busy with directing own theatrical plays, dancing and drawing piles of imaginary weird worlds. Visualizing ideas and creating artistic experiences became the passion and expression of my visions and thoughts.

Why did you choose Graphic Design at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK)?

While I was receiving my first bachelor's degree in Architecture, I've realised that it's not really my thing anymore. I was still searching for myself and during my trip to the Netherlands, I've suddenly decided to do another study in a more creative field. I chose Graphic Design at KABK because the program promised to be experimental, diverse and challenging.

F

How did you experience your graduation period?

I have to admit that it was a quite stressful and intense period of my life. I've realised that in order to gain a valuable experience you have to sacrifice your time, mental and physical energy. The project went through all 'stages of birth' including the idea, concept, research, experiments and failures, breakdowns, new findings, visualisation and production. I miss those times but I'm happy they're over.

F

What's the most valuable lesson you learnt during your study?

Every project worked like a mirror, through which I've got to know myself better. It wasn't always a pleasant experience, but it helped to find my own path and gave confidence in my work. I think you should always trust yourself first, although be open to critique, different opinions and opposite thoughts. The beauty of everything lies in its creation process.

How does your workspace look like?

I would describe my workspace as a semi-digital / semi-physical latent space. Any place can transform into it.

What have you recently seen that you think is great creative work?

I'm quite impressed by Refik Anadol artworks. The way he embeds AI with data science into architecture and transforms physical space into a digital art dimension is very fascinating.

F

What are your plans in the near future?

I think finding a job is the biggest challenge for a fresh graduate 😁I would like to gain more experience in some creative design studio and keep developing my artistic ideas into juicy projects on a side. I'm also very open to any sorts of experiments and collaborations. Some of them will be announced soon.

F

Can you give one piece of advice to future students?

Experiment, fail, enjoy and push it to the limits! The biggest gem of the studying process is a great possibility to learn more about yourself, find inner strength and grow a creative personality within.
